Things I want to remember that I learned and will probably forget :

Jeans are better when they have been dried with heat. They fit better and are less likely to gather around ones knees.

Having feelings for someone isn't profound. It just is. Enjoy it. (Not related to previous sentence)

Stop eating wheat. Being sneaky is only making me feel yuk. (Continuing to eat wheat will not counteract the jeans not fitting properly problem)

Study is fun. It is. It is not a chore. I have a lot to learn and won't by watching the entire West Wing boxed set for a 3rd time. Read stuff!

Hmmm. I think that is all I can remember for today.

Man. This would have been around 1983. I am feeling so old right now. I fucking hated that dress but I was forced to wear it because my mother could (and still can) throw bigger tantrums than me.

I don't know to who the elbow on the right belongs but the hand and blue dress and lower face belong to Allison. She lived in my street 2 doors down.

I don't know who else was there. I have some vague recollection of the cake sprinkles being the long coloured ones and not 100s and 1000s. Disappointments come thick and fast at that age.

I don't think I was planning on punching someone, I suspect it is more likely I was holding something with my left hand.

First I stripped my bed. Then tossed all the blankets and cat beds and pillows and threw them on the balcony. I vacuumed my room and everything. Then I washed the windows out the front and the path and the dog. By that stage it was lunchtime and I was pretty sure I'd earned me some potato cakes.

I'll have to go back to work tomorrow. I won't get a thing done.

This is Pilot in action down the South Coast today.

I really like this one because he is doing is full pointer pose... straight tail... leg raised... he just needs his nose up in the air!

It was his first trip to the coast today and the first song on my playlist was Pilate by Pearl Jam! He is named after this song - I changed the spelling though because I felt the idea of a loyal friend and the whole biblical story thing was just too much to lay on a little doggy.

The year of being pulled along by the Seat of your Pants? The year of Illness?

See I like to give my years these kinds of titles... I guess it is a way of drawing a line between one year and the next. 2006 was the year of Getting Independence (also known as the year of the Davids - Don't ask) 2007 was the year of Getting my Shit Together. 2008 might have been the year of Moving House.

So what should 2009 be?

I mean all a year is - is a row of days followed by another row of days right? The Chinese go in for the year of the Horse (when I was born... for example) and all that. They have declared 2010 will be the year of the Tiger. Some randon website says the for the Horse 2010 'might be one of the smoothest years for you. You will find bonds between your friends and relatives being built fairly easily. Keep a clear head when making decisions for you will find that plenty of decisions may sound similar to one another but with very different outcomes. You may also tend to overfeed yourself in the upcoming year so be sure to keep on a healthy diet and exercise regularly.' Ok. Over feeding is one of my favourite food groups... and it sounds like decision making will require some thought before I jump in... but I do like the sound of smooth. 2010 the Year of Smooth. Ok that sounds bad. It makes me think of hair grease. But I'm getting the idea.

So what was 2009 compared to 2010's potential? I seemed to be running to keep up and making a big mess. Spread to thin. Trying to reach too many goals maybe. trying my luck too much.

Might it then be the year of Being Out of Control? The year of Reacting? The year of Over Reacting? The year of Pie?

I think I shall call it... The Year of Disappointment. Not that I am saying all of it was bad... I got up to all kinds of fun stuff and there were some great gigs for example... I got to see Gomez live 4 times! I got to dance my butt off to Midnight Oil live again. I think the Disappointment comes in with the reaching for too many goals perhaps and not really having a direction in mind. I need to sit tight for a bit and work on things a little more rather that trying my luck all the time.

Hmmm... so this brings up the issues of New Years resolutions. Normally I don't bother. But I guess I want to be less fractured, less negative and I don't want to work so hard at pushing my luck all the time.

I have been sick. Not deathly sick but held up from life stuck sitting still sick. Penicillin allergy. Boring. Needless to say despite my best efforts I have been doing a lot of thinking... about 2009. I have an hypothesis that it has been one really shit arsed year. I know a few people who would agree... various events have got them down. For me personally it has been a year of confusion and disappointment... of staring things down as they come and hit me but not understanding why they are coming at all.

It is December 2009 and I feel myself stretching for New Years. Normally I don't give a toot. But for some reason it feels as though moving on to the next set of 365 days will some how end the onslaught that I feel like I have been under all year.

Am I heading in the right direction? Are my feet on the right path? Or should I stop worrying and relax so when things do hit me they don't hurt so much?

1. My pets.

They are my homies. They sit on me when I am too hyped to relax. They yell at me to feed them when I am sitting in a puddle on the floor. They look after me. I like watching them when they are being silly.

2. My MacBook.

I love this thing. It is way smart and one day I will know all the cool things it can do. It lets me chat. It plays music. TV. It helps me with my homework and tells me the weather... so smart!

3. My Sewing Machine.

Hours of fun. I love making stuff. It is so satisfying. I can't wait til I can make some clothes and groovy things. So far I can only sew straight lines but I want to make skirts and wrap dresses and things like that.

4. My iPod.

I would love to nominate this thing for a Nobel Peace Prize.

I know the Hume highway pretty well. I know certain trees in different light, the lists of sign posts and good places to stop where the dog can run. I love the change of patterns in light and shade as the trees move away from the road and recede into grasslands and towns. As I drive by them my eyes follow roads that lead off to the East and West. My thoughts triggered by this place name or that roadside stop. It had been seven years since the first trip. I remember how big a deal it was in those days; food was prepared and packed and the car checked. Music strategically planned for the ebb and flow of energy. I’d follow the map, checking off places as we passed. Just to make sure. Now days I do not share the drive. I stop when I have to. My ipod plays nonstop on random. I fill my water bottle but do not pack sandwiches. I drive with my eyes glazed. I know that when the trees come close and start to crowd the roadside that it is almost time to turn inland.

As I head south again, home, my thoughts will often turn to previous drives. Tracing old ground. Maybe my tires get stuck in the old grooves. On the first trip back down, it was an evening in mid December, and the light was pink. It was beautiful. But I was peeling like a photograph in a fire on the inside. I could barely contain my over heated thoughts. Far away down south - while I had been packing the car ready for our first trip home, my grandmother had been injured. A head injury that knocked her out. The image struck me cold. For the first time I was overcome by fear for her life. I sobbed and sobbed for miles on that early trip home. My impotent husband unable to console me.

Not long after this I had driven back up with a carload of my pot plants. My daphne and my lillies. I felt so proud and excited. My plants always made me feel all the more at home. We unpacked the car and in the tray of one of them was a frog. A tiny brown frog the size of my thumbnail. At first I was excited – a hitchhiker from home! But it wasn’t long before I realised he’d die if I kept him. We called the ranger and he was taken to a local reptile park to live out his days.

Closer to the end of our marriage when we were driving south, my thoughts would follow my eyes and turn away to the East as we drove south through New South Wales. Unknown lands lay that way. I’d fallen in love with a Wagga boy. I wondered what kind of place would create such gentle composed beauty. What colour the dirt was. The trees. Were there hills on his horizons? I wanted to know but had to peer across my husbands arms at the landscape beyond. I had to be content to day dream. After the divorce my thoughts would wander wider and I would look for a black car on the side of the road, perhaps a burst tire or maybe he would be out of fuel? I could help. I would stop and smile. And he would look up and see me and be relieved. It never happened. It won’t ever happen.

It was on one of my solo drives south that I got the call that I had a job at the library. My phone rang and I missed the call. I pulled into a service station and called back. The news was good. My gamble to return to Canberra solo had paid off. It looked like I might have a career after all.

After all.

Such a loaded sentence.

I finished at the gallery. I quit. I threw in the towel. I ran away and hid.

It is the end of an era I guess. I started there two years ago when I moved back to Canberra. I wanted some human company and an artists coop seemed like the perfect place to be. The gardens are glorious is spring. The visitors are fantastic to talk to. The fire is perfect for relaxing in front of during winter. The veranda is divine in summer. Wrens pop around in the gardens and chickens and turkeys gad about in herds.

But I had to go. In two years it went from a quaint little group of people putting their wares in the shop. To... a quaint little group of people putting their wares in the shop. Nothing has evolved, Nothing has changed. Many of the items have been sitting there since long before I joined. Layers of dust building up. The items... I'm not really able to call it art... are uncreative... in short... the shine has worn orf. I could go on whinging about the inability to progress, to try new things, to experiment. And hence another person has dropped off the twig. I saw a few start and attempt change and loose heart in the time I was there. I finally gave up. It was time to move on. It is a weird feeling. Relief? Sad?

But at least I have some wicked pictures of chickens.

I have been given a short term project at work... sorting out this collection of children's books. The earliest texts are from the 1780 and so forth to now... all the items have something to do with Australia somehow... and my job is to put all 7600 of them into alphabetical order.

This is 20 times more fun than it sounds. I am so excited about all the cover designs. They are so beautiful and I do think some of them... or the style of the early 1900s items would make the most excellent tattoos. I will gather a good array of them to show exactly what I mean. Otherwise keep an eye out on my flickr site for more...

I'm slowly building up my stock for the next market. I am really liking mixing up the doilies and japanese fabrics. The glass button is also a really nice touch. It is vintage. A friends mum had been collecting buttons for 30 or 40 years and emptied them all into my eager hands last Christmas. They came from all over the world.

I love the colours. Gray is beautiful. It makes me calm and passive inside. To mix the Japanese spring florals, glass button, doily and gold ribbon with it is like decorating a quiet room.

Hey.

Its my 150th post! I know that is not a lot for a blog that is three years old but I am really pleased! It has been the craziest three years of my life!

This photograph was taken by my housemate earlier this year and I really love it. I have a huge smile on my face; which represents where I'm at in my life, I'm wearing my favourite t; which represents my musical and creative life (which contributes to the smile!!), my red necklace I got from India; representing my adventurist side and my luck (the trip was won by my beautiful friend who has been lost to me for a while now) and my brown cardigan represents my career as a Liburrian! And of course Pilot is my main guy!

So many things have changed since I started this blog. I began writing it because I needed to hang on to the good stuff and reflect on it and I think, sparse as it is, that process of reflecting and holding on has grown the good stuff into bigger and better things!

So yay!

Tansi Boo when she was a bubba. It was a really cold Sunday afternoon and she was snuggled up under the lamp trying to keep warm. She is a bit made like that... once when grilling cheese on toast for breakfast I ducked out the kitchen and when I came back she had snuggled up on the griller door half under the grill... mmm... tasty grilled cheese and cat on toast! She didn't burn herself it was just funny to see the lengths she'd go to to warm up! The red background is my red and gold kimono.

I took a few shots that day - messing round with my new dig... I was really struggling to find agood setting to capture the moment. Quite a few shots got tossed out but the blur on this one just made it magical instead of a mistake.

I'm gonna blog my photos from my favourite set on flickr.

This is the earliest one. Its my Pilot and some guy I used to love. We were lazing about on the lawns of Parliament House. The weather was kinda warm and humid... late summer? It was late in the afternoon, as you can kind of see from the trees in the background. I added this photo to a group that was eventually used in an exhibition in NY.

I like it. It reminds me that photography is not all technical. Sometimes it really is whatever the shutter sees that can capture the moment.

I work at The Liberry. I'm acting in a special collections area where I get to assist in the purchase of art, photographs and watercolours and paintings and etchings and pastels and even the odd photocopy... I really love what I do. I guess it is possible to say it is the thing I want to do when I grow up. It is certainly the only thing keeping me in Canberra at this point in time. Tomorrow I find out if I get to stay on. I really want to stay. It is great work. And with that I fear returning to my old job cataloguing. It is boring and mind numbing and heart numbing. Especially in contrast to what I have had the opportunity to do in Pictures. I do know that if I go back things won't be evil bad... I will get to study more and apply for jobs in Melbourne and I have to focus on that.

But I really like what I'm doing now. And I don't want that to stop.

Sigh.

I have just thrown a whole heap of photos on flickr from my India trip from two years ago... I didn't have many up - I guess I'd never really got round to it? Maybe.

Anyway this image was taken across a lake. The tree was so stunning I could have looked at it all day. However this shot was taken in the afternoon light. See the door off to the right hand side? It was about the size of a regular door - so you can see how big and beautiful this lovely tree really is.

The Handmade market was a lot of fun. Snowpea got poached to take part in a fiber arts display festival thing in July and a weekend long music festival market next year - which was very exciting! We made lots of new friends and bonded with many an old duck over the doilys.

These are the letters for the sign I made. They look better here than on the sign - which I threw out already!

All in all it was a good day. The weather held and the food was good. The best bit (other than tons of cash!!) was watching the passing crowd.

I started out online today by uploading some images to flickr. One was this gumtree. I took the photo a few days ago on a uni trip to Lanyon. I was having a miserable day. I was feeling homesick and really far away from the kind of life I want. The caption I added to it as it was loading was homesick for gum trees. While it was loading I looked at my stars in the Feral Scum newspaper and it was exactly on this issue. I don't necessarily believe in horoscopes in the traditional sense but I do like how reading them can sometimes help you articulate where you are at and give you a different framework from which to view things.

I am ok here in Canberra. I do have an awesome job and amazing friends. But I do look forward to the day when I can resettle down South.

This is a photo from my new camera. Its the smallest camera I've ever owned. My big one is getting tired from me lugging it round all the time and the little one can be with me all the time.

I'm really pleased with this shot. It was in low light conditions and the leaves in the shot are twice the size they are in real life. This camera is going to open a whole new field of day to day photos that I haven't really gone into before.

I sat here this morning listening to the Canadian guy play his banjo. The place was full. Most people standing. Nodding time. Enjoying the smell and the damper and the tea and the plinky sounds. A blue grey man wandered in through the pines and the crowd standing about, begging pardon of two men he settled on a bench in between them facing my way.

I breathed in deeply. Letting the breezey atmosphere down into the still bits inside me.

The Canadian guy forgotten for a moment I played with my camera on my lap. Editing photos from the morning, planning shots for later in the day. I looked up and decided to shoot the Canadian, his banjo and then swung round to include the crowd. The blue grey man was watching me as I'd hoped he might be. He dropped his gaze into his tea. I smiled. My heart lifted its hooded eyes and peaked around the table.

I lowered my camera and returned my gaze back to the entertainment. Aware now I saw the blue grey man's gaze was on me again. My heart shook itself awake in the warmth of the autumn sun. I followed its gaze up in his direction and he looked away. I smiled inside myself again and turned back to the Canadian guy and his banjo.

I'd been introduced to the blue grey man a few days before. He'd been talking guitars with my host and we got talking and as I watched him talk he became beautiful. I snuck into his gig last night, half way through the first song. He has a voice like water. I gathered my courage and looked up quickly and caught his eye, he blinked and stared, so I waved a little. He waved back and we nodded a small hello. My heart stretched and thumped its tail on the walls. I inhaled a lungful of banjo and love songs and woodsmoke. The Canadian guy got my attention again by saying thank you for listening and reminding the audience of the time and place of his next gig.

I rose with the crowd and lined up for a cup of tea. The blue grey man rose too and made his way out, stopping to greet friends here and there. I turned my attention to the boiling billy and the sugar. As I returned to my roo skin seat with my green plastic mug a leggy woman with curly black hair made her way to his side.

My heart yawned and stretched. Turned three times to the left on its blanket and plonked back down to sleep.

Waiting for my tea to cool at the stockman's camp. Some crazy old fart is strumming double time on a guitar. I'm suprised its still in tune.

Its warm outside today and my tea is still steaming in its green plastic mug. Boiling hot straight from the fire.

'Anyone with an instrument is welcome to come up here and have a sit. We're playing anything'. He says. 'Anything in the key of G' he adds as they begin another tune.
The only person on stage without a beard is a woman sitting quietly with a fiddle in her lap. Some kind of waltz is going now. There are 2 fiddles, 1 harmonica, 1 ukelele and 3 squeeze boxes. I want to sway in my seat. Mesmerised, as I write, by the vibration of the tent. 2 rooting flies land on my camera and shake me out of my head.

I remember my tea. It is cool enough to drink now but I'm reluctant to drain my cup for fear of altering the mood of the music.

Smoke rolls out between the pines from the spit. 2 sheep are squewered across the hot coals cooking slowly for tea. The smell is divine in a way that nothing bottled and sold for a fortune ever is. A kid bashes away behind me in the smokey pines on a 44 gallon horse. The music has picked up now. Almost merry. A melancholy jig that could only have its origins in Ireland.

The lone woman finally lifts her bow and contributes to the sound. A tin whistle is leading the way. 'A Tasmanian version of an Irish tune...' he says when it winds to a halt. Someone comes and adds their name to the blackboard completing the lineup for today.

My tea is cold. I sip the sugar waiting at the bottom. I need to pee but I will ignore it until it yells louder than the band.

Ok. So I went to Sydney a few weeks ago. My mate Squeeze had a free hotel stay for 2 nights and had to make use of it by a certain date... I landed a few hours before S and spent a couple of hours wandering about gawking at this and that. S arrived and we headed back out for a walk to Darling Harbour, we'd missed the boat in regards to dinner and were left with the dismal choice of sausage in bread with or without cheese... So of course, as cheese is one of my favourite food groups (along with champagne and chips...) we chose the cheese...

Saturday morning saw us hit the streets, our goal was some time at Paddy's market (where I landed myself the coolest green hat - will post soon) and a bus trip to the suburbs to visit Signature Prints. Where we were invited out the back for a tour of sorts... luckily we were armed with cameras and given permission to shoot.

After we came down from that cloud we returned to the hotel to rest up eat chips and get ready to head out to Mardi Gras. Everything they say about it is true. It is fun and joyous and apart from an over dramatic teen queen or two the entire event was a blast. Squeeze and I danced and laughed and photographed our way down Oxford Street. Special mentions go to hot guy on a pole, 2 guys in rahrah skirts and the Columbians who all danced very well...

I was so over hyped and happy (chemical and alcohol free) I didn't sleep til after 3 am. Sunday morning we wandered down to the Quay. We ate breakfast and we wandered back to the hotel. Squeeze took off at lunchtime and I bussed it to Coogee to catch up with a mate who had recently moved from Canberra. Coogee was gorgeous! We have plans to get jobs and move there when we grow up.

Sunday night was spent out in the burbs. It rained and rained and was so beautiful!

Monday we drove home... and we will never ever pull off the freeway ever again...

Down Mollymook way...

Friday we went to Mollymook for a weekend away. The first item on the agenda was dinner... we went to the vege place in Milton...

We tried very hard to put 4 heads in a photo and failed.

On Saturday we drove to Nowra, which was hideous, we drove to Jervis Bay looking for coffee and failed and ended up in beautiful Huskisson. Sitting on the pier, watching birds and stingrays and boats. We walked out and along the waterline...

where I fell on my head on some rocks.

Team couch kicked some arse playing trivial pursuit after dinner... winning in record time of course!

After a game of trivial pursuit we walked out on the cliffs and listened to the waves crashing. Sim came up with the idea of going for a skinny dip...

So we did.

Sunday morning began with a quite walk out to the cliffs where I sat alone, wrapped in my quilt and watched the sunrise. After a while, 3 dolphins swam into view. They sat back behind the waves and slowly made their way around the headland. The day wore on with a swim at the Mollymook beach, a hideous lunch in Ulladulla and a lazy afternoon sprawled on the grass.

Sunday night ended with a lovely dinner of pesto and wine and cake!

And the sunrise on Monday heralded a beautiful day of cups of tea, swimming, sunburn and smiles.

Hello everyone

As some of you know I have family in the Kilmore Broadford area in Victoria where the fires went through last Saturday and at the moment I am feeling really far away from home. While everyone I know is ok I still feel that it is important to do something to contribute. I have been looking for something to do from here that is useful and practical. Yesterday afternoon on the radio I heard an idea of something I can do to help and I thought it was something I could get a few other people to do as well.

The RSPCA and other animal rescue groups, like WIRES, will run out of towels and pouches very quickly. I know a lot of you are crafty and like to sew and knit and I was thinking that we could gather towels and fabric and make pouches to send down to aid in the care of the injured animals.

For people who can’t sew or don’t have time a donation of towels or cotton fabric would be a fantastic contribution.

Here are some instructions and requirements that you might find useful:

Making possum/wallaby joey pouches.

When juvenile marsupials come into care they need to be kept warm and quiet. Many people who would like to help our wildlife but are unable to commit to rescue or care volunteering, can help by making pouches and linings.

Pouches:

Wool: 8 ply pure wool (unfortunately we are unable to use pouches made from synthetic materials)
Knitting: Pouches should be knitted in plain stitch both sides, or 2 pearl 2 knit.
Needles: Size 8 needles
Dimensions: 25 cm wide by 30 cm long
Closed on three sides and open at the top.
Or think something along the lines of an oven mitt...

Lining:

Material: pure cotton washable material only, flannelet or old towels are perfect. PJ pant legs are also good!
Dimensions: 25 cm wide by 30 cm long. Think about A4 size...
The lining should not be attached to the pouch as it will need to be changed regularly.
We generally require more linings than pouches to allow washing and regular changes.
The lining should be closed on three sides and open at the top.

I will get on to some organisations and see where the pouches can be posted to. In the meantime GET SEWING!!

Busy busy

SATURDAY I flew to Melbourne for a few days. I usually drive so flying was a bit of an indulgence!

My ma picked me up and went drove directly to Bendigo for the Golden Age of Couture exhibition. Which was amazing. Over 100 gowns to marvel at. Bendigo is such a gorgeous town. There is a row of shops opposite the gallery (on View St of course) with a few great little cafes and junk shops and it is well worth a visit. The Bendigo gallery is another sort of paradise altogether. And the shop... oh the shop...

Saturday night was Squeeze's 30th... and a mini secondary school reunion of sorts.

SUNDAY I photographed Grace and Harrison's christening in Woodend. The weather was gorgeous and the babies behaved so well. The service was painful. I have very little experience of such events and can't imagine why people would put themselves through it... particularly on a Sunday when there are bacon and eggs to be had.

After the christening I got a train to Melbourne and a tram to St Kilda were I saw Gomez and The Black Keys. It was the 3rd time I have seen Gomez and the first for the Black Keys. They were very loud for two little hairy guys from Utah.

MONDAY morning was spent in transit. From Coburg to the city, I stopped at SLV for some internets. Then got the train to Woodend to my mum and my aunty and a friend for lunch and a spot or 7 of shopping.

Monday evening I had dinner with my stupid father who told me he'd given up family night at home with his gf and her kids to meet me so I should be grateful. (The following is a photo taken of my dad before he was an arse... but not much before)

TUESDAY I woke up at Springfield still scratching my head from dinner and wandering slowly about the house taking it easy. The afternoon was going to be hot and I needed to conserve energy to get to St Kilda and see Gomez again. Twice! As it turned out...

WEDNESDAY started with a tram ride down Sydney road to 3a where I had breakfast with Gypsy (and Pauline of course!!)

On my way to the airport I stopped in Melbourne and went to Kimono House and Clegs to get my hands on some gorgeous fabric and braid. I can feel some creating coming on..

More India adventures...

The train arrived at the bottom of the mountain at 11 am. Sunny. Warm. It was amazing to wake up in the morning on the train - cool air rushing past. I sat in my sleeping bag at the window for ages watching the world get lighter. The passengers coming to life around me. We passed fields and trees and small towns and every crossing we raced past had groups of people waiting to pass. Rural India was busy early.

After some negotiation by Experienced Traveller we hooked up with a jeep and when it was full (and I mean nose to nose...) we heading off up the mountain for the craziest drive I have ever been on (discounting of course being on a motorbike with my dad - more on that some other time perhaps). It was a full tilt hurtle up the mountain and there were times when I made the decision to shut my eyes and think of pretty things. Monkeys sat roadside amused I'm sure at the wide eyes humans whipping past trees and busses and vehicles. Finally after 45 mins or so we pulled up in the parking lot - it was a bus station but had all kinds of vehicles. There were also horses. My first view of the curly eared paints blew me away. It did not look natural but it was.

Our first objective was to locate the Shree Ganesh hotel. The colours and the view were brilliant.

After a shower and unpacking we headed out for a walk around the town and the lake and met a girl called Amy from New York. She was a bit sick so we helped her get to a doctor. We walked up to the world renowned and highly famous (according to the locals) Toad Rock. (Seen in the distance in the following shot)

Dinner that night was in house at the Shree Ganesh. Omlette and finger cheeps.
